A 7-day ordinary pass costs ¥50,000 through the official online channel. From 1 October 2026, the price at a JR-designated agency overseas becomes ¥53,000. The classic first trip, Tokyo to Kyoto, a few days around Kansai, then back to fly home, often costs less in individual tickets. Use the route estimate above before buying a pass.
The pass can win on a route with several expensive JR legs. A Tokyo to Fukuoka return plus local JR travel comes close to the 7-day online price; a side trip may take it over. Add your actual journeys above before deciding.
It compares the nationwide pass with ordinary reserved fares on the routes most first-time visitors actually take. It does not price the regional passes, which are often the real winner: the Kansai Wide Area Pass, the JR East passes, the Hokuriku Arch Pass. If your trip stays inside one region, check a regional pass before you rule the whole idea out.
The pass comparison assumes a train covered by the pass. It does not add the optional Nozomi/Mizuho special ticket. If you plan to take one of those trains with a pass, add the extra ticket for each ride.

The official online price is ¥50,000 for 7 days ordinary, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days. From 1 October, a 7-day ordinary exchange order from a JR-designated agency overseas costs ¥53,000. Check both official tables for the other plans.

No. Tokyo Metro and Toei are separate companies. The pass covers JR lines only, including the Yamanote loop, so use an IC card for local rides on those operators.
The pass alone does not. Buy the special Nozomi/Mizuho ticket for each ride if you want to use those trains. JR lists the Tokyo to Kyoto extra ticket at ¥4,960. Hikari or Sakura does not need that extra ticket. Read the JR conditions.
Suica pays for many local trains, subways and buses. A Shinkansen trip needs a separate ticket or an eligible booking linked to the IC card. Compare your long-distance route with the pass price above. JR Central explains linked bookings.
The official JR site sells it online; JR-designated agencies overseas sell exchange orders. The prices can differ by channel, so choose yours above and confirm the current terms on the JR price page.
