Getting Around Grindelwald by Public Transport

Grindelwald sits under the north face of the Eiger and is one of the main gateways into the high Jungfrau region, with a fast gondola and older mountain railways both heading up from the village.

Tip

The Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald Terminal is the fast way up toward Jungfraujoch, valley buses and mountain railways cover the rest.

The network in one minute

Grindelwald is a mountain village first and a transport hub second, sitting directly beneath the Eiger’s north face, with routes heading up toward Jungfraujoch and down the valley toward Interlaken.

  • Mountain railways, the older cog line from Grindelwald station climbs toward Kleine Scheidegg and onward routes.
  • Gondolas, the newer Eiger Express leaves from Grindelwald Terminal and covers the same climb in a fraction of the time.
  • Buses, valley buses connect Grindelwald to nearby villages and to the Interlaken road.

Two stations, two ways up

Grindelwald has its original station in the village centre, where the older mountain railway toward Kleine Scheidegg departs. A short distance away, Grindelwald Terminal is the base for the Eiger Express, a large modern gondola that cuts the time up toward Jungfraujoch significantly compared with the older line.

Which one to use depends on whether you want the faster ride or the more traditional, scenic cog railway experience, both eventually reach the same high-altitude connections.

Tickets without the guesswork

Fares up toward Jungfraujoch and the surrounding high routes are priced separately from the main Swiss network, since these are steep, specialised mountain lines. A Swiss Travel Pass covers the approach into the region and discounts the climb from Grindelwald.

See it live

Both the Eiger Express and the older cog railway run on their own schedules, and conditions higher up can affect timing. The Swiss Transport app shows live departures from both Grindelwald station and the Terminal, so you can pick the route that’s actually running on time.
