The network in one minute

Lugano feels more Italian than Swiss in pace and architecture, and its transport mixes practical city buses with a short funicular and a network of lake boats that reach villages you’d otherwise need a car for.

  • Buses, cover the city centre and reach the surrounding hills and suburbs.
  • Funicular, a short, steep line drops from the station straight down to the centre.
  • Lake boats, seasonal boats connect Lugano to villages around Lake Lugano, including some across the Italian border.

From the station down

Lugano’s station sits well above the town centre, on a hillside, so the short funicular down to Lugano Centro is worth taking rather than walking the steep road, especially with luggage. It runs constantly and takes only a couple of minutes.

Out onto the lake

From the lakefront, boats reach villages scattered around Lake Lugano that are otherwise a longer drive around the shore, some of the loveliest ones, like Gandria, are really only convenient by water.

Tickets without the guesswork

Lugano’s buses, funicular and lake boats mostly share the same zone-based ticketing as the rest of Swiss public transport, though some longer lake boat routes are priced separately. A day pass is worth it once you’re making a few trips.

See it live

Getting the funicular timing right after a train, or catching a lake boat before the last one of the day, matters more here than in a flat city. The Swiss Transport app shows live departures across buses, the funicular and the boats, so you’re never left waiting on the dock.
