Tip

Montreux is walkable along the lakeside promenade, boats hop along the Riviera and a cog railway climbs to Rochers-de-Naye.

The network in one minute

Montreux sits on a curve of Lake Geneva’s shore known for its mild climate and palm-lined promenade, and much of the town is genuinely walkable end to end along the water.

  • Trains, the main-line connects Montreux to Lausanne and Geneva, and it’s also the starting point for the GoldenPass scenic route toward Interlaken and Lucerne.
  • Lake boats, seasonal boats hop between Montreux and neighbouring towns along the Riviera, including Vevey and Chillon Castle.
  • Cog railway, a steep rack line climbs from Montreux station up to Rochers-de-Naye, above the lake.

Along the lakeside

Montreux’s promenade runs the length of the town along the water, and most sights, hotels and restaurants sit right along it, so walking is often the easiest option for short hops.

Up to Rochers-de-Naye

The cog railway leaving directly from Montreux station climbs steeply above the lake to Rochers-de-Naye, with views back down over the water that get better the higher you go. It’s a different pace and a different world from the lakeside within about an hour.

Tickets without the guesswork

Montreux’s main-line trains and lake boats fall under standard Swiss public transport ticketing, while the Rochers-de-Naye cog railway is priced separately as a specialised mountain line. A Swiss Travel Pass covers the main-line approach and discounts the climb.

See it live

Boats along the Riviera and the cog railway both run on their own timetables, less frequent than the main line. The Swiss Transport app shows live departures so you can time a boat hop or the climb to Rochers-de-Naye without missing the next one.
