Getting Around Zermatt by Public Transport
Zermatt is car-free, so you arrive by mountain railway and get around on electric transport once you're in. It's one of the simplest towns in Switzerland to navigate on foot, if you don't mind an incline.
Zermatt is car-free, you arrive by the cog railway from Visp or Täsch, then get around on electric buses, cable cars and the Gornergrat railway.
The network in one minute
Zermatt bans combustion-engine cars entirely, which shapes everything about getting around. You arrive by rail, from Visp on the main line or from the car park town of Täsch, and once you’re there, the village itself is compact enough to cross on foot in about fifteen minutes.
- Mountain trains, the approach line from Visp and Täsch, plus the Gornergrat cog railway climbing above the village.
- Electric buses, small electric taxis and shuttle buses handle transport within the village and to nearby hotels.
- Cable cars, several lines climb from Zermatt toward the Matterhorn’s surrounding peaks and glacier areas.
Getting in
Regular cars stop at Täsch, a few minutes below Zermatt by shuttle train, where there’s a large car park. Visitors arriving by main-line rail from Visp ride the same approach line straight into the village. Either way, the last stretch into Zermatt is always by train.
Once you’re there
Zermatt’s centre is pedestrian, so walking covers most day-to-day needs. The electric buses and taxis handle luggage and hotel transfers, while the Gornergrat railway climbs out of the station for Matterhorn views, and several cable cars head toward the glacier and skiing areas above the village.
Tickets without the guesswork
The approach by main-line rail is covered by a Swiss Travel Pass, though the Gornergrat railway and most cable cars above Zermatt are priced and ticketed separately, being specialised mountain lines.
See it live
With trains, cable cars and buses all running on their own schedules, keeping track of the next departure matters, especially heading up toward Gornergrat where conditions and queues vary by time of day. The Swiss Transport app shows live departures across the whole network, so you know exactly when to head to the platform.
