Getting Around Zürich by Public Transport
Zürich has one of the densest, most punctual transit networks in the world. Trams and buses cover the city centre, S-Bahn trains reach the whole region, and boats cross the lake in summer.
The network in one minute
Zürich’s transport is run as one integrated system: a single ticket works across trams, buses, S-Bahn trains and lake boats within the zones you buy. The city centre is almost entirely walkable, but trams are faster than they look and run every few minutes.
- Trams — the backbone of the inner city. Lines fan out from the main station (Zürich HB) and Bellevue.
- S-Bahn — regional trains that reach the airport, the lake towns and the suburbs. Frequent and fast.
- Buses — fill in the hills and the gaps the trams don’t reach.
- Boats — lake boats run spring–autumn and are covered by normal zone tickets for the short hops.
From the airport to the centre
Zürich Airport sits on the S-Bahn. Trains to Zürich HB take about 10–12 minutes and run several times an hour. It’s faster and cheaper than a taxi at almost any time of day.
Tickets without the guesswork
Zürich uses a zone system: buy a ticket for the number of zones you’ll cross; most central trips are a single short-hop or one-zone ticket. If you’re staying a few days, a day pass usually pays for itself after three or four rides.
See it live
Departure boards change constantly, especially around Zürich HB. The Swiss Transport app shows live departures, the exact platform, and the next connections from wherever you’re standing — so you walk straight to the right tram instead of reading the static timetable.
