St. Moritz to Zermatt by Train

This is the Glacier Express route, a full day of high alpine scenery connecting two of Switzerland's best-known mountain resorts on a single, unhurried train.

The journey

The Glacier Express runs once daily (seasonal, and reservation required) between St. Moritz and Zermatt, direct, taking about eight hours. It crosses the Oberalp Pass and threads through the Rhine gorge, often called the Swiss Grand Canyon, with panoramic windows built for exactly this kind of view.

What makes it different

This isn’t a regular commuter service, it’s a dedicated scenic train with panoramic carriages, at-seat dining, and a pace built around the landscape rather than getting somewhere quickly. A seat reservation is required well in advance during peak season.

When it runs

The full route typically operates from spring through autumn, with a shorter winter timetable on part of the line. Outside the main season, the same corridor is still covered by regular regional trains with a change or two, just without the panoramic carriages and dining.

Tickets

A Swiss Travel Pass covers the base fare, though the Glacier Express reservation and any at-seat dining are booked and paid separately, since this is a premium scenic product layered on top of the regular network.

Plan it live

With only one departure a day and a mandatory reservation, there’s no flexibility to simply catch a later train if plans slip. The Swiss Transport app shows the day’s departure time and status, so you’re not left checking a static timetable for a train that only runs once.
