Zürich to Zermatt by Train

Zermatt sits at the end of a mountain branch line, so the trip from Zürich means one clean change in Visp before the final climb into car-free Zermatt.

The journey

Trains from Zürich HB to Zermatt run about hourly and take roughly three hours and fifteen minutes, with one change in Visp. The last stretch, climbing from Visp into the mountains toward Zermatt, is where the scenery really opens up, with the Matterhorn coming into view as you approach.

The change at Visp

Visp is where the main line ends and the mountain branch into Zermatt begins, the connecting train is timed to meet the arriving service, so the change is usually straightforward, just cross the platform.

Luggage and the car-free rule

Since no regular cars are allowed into Zermatt itself, some travellers driving in leave their car at Täsch, just below the resort, and take a short shuttle train the rest of the way, an alternative to the full rail journey from Zürich.

Tickets

A Swiss Travel Pass covers the main-line stretch to Visp in full and discounts the mountain branch onward to Zermatt, worth having if the Matterhorn is one stop on a longer Swiss itinerary.

Plan it live

Since Zermatt is car-free, arriving on the right train matters more than usual, there’s no taxi shortcut if you miss a connection, and the next mountain-branch departure can be a real wait. The Swiss Transport app tracks both legs of this journey live, so the change at Visp actually lines up.
