What is Tanuki?
Tanuki teaches English speakers Japanese, from hiragana and katakana through kanji, vocabulary, grammar and graded reading, across the full JLPT ladder from N5 to N1. It uses active recall, spaced repetition, stroke-order tracing, furigana, and pitch-accent data, so what you learn actually sticks.
Lessons and reviews work offline, and there are no streaks that punish you for missing a day.
Do I need an account?
No. You can install Tanuki and start learning immediately, with no sign-up and no name or email address. The app creates a guest account with a random user ID to back up your progress and let you send content reports. If you want your progress on another device, you can sign in with Apple or Google from Settings.
How does the review schedule work?
Tanuki uses a spaced-repetition scheduler (FSRS). Each kana, kanji, word and grammar point you learn is scheduled to come back for review just before you would forget it. The more reliably you recall something, the longer until it returns. Missing a day simply reschedules your reviews; nothing is lost and you are never penalized.
Why does it ask me to type or trace instead of just tapping?
Producing the answer yourself, by tracing the stroke order or typing on the in-app kana keyboard, is what builds durable memory. Multiple-choice is used only the first time you meet a new item; after that, Tanuki asks you to recall it actively.
Does Tanuki use romaji?
Only briefly, as a training wheel inside the kana module while you are still learning the shapes. Once you know hiragana and katakana, the app writes Japanese in kana and kanji, with furigana to help you read the kanji, instead of romaji.
Something in a lesson looks wrong. How do I report it?
Tap "Something looks wrong?" on the lesson or review screen and choose the type of problem. The report includes the item, the problem type, the text that was on screen, an optional short note, the language the app explains in, the app version and your user ID, so it is deleted with your account. It carries no name, email address or contact detail. We use these reports to correct the content.
How do I turn practice reminders on or off?
Open Settings and use the practice reminder option. Reminders are off until you enable them, and you choose the time. Your phone schedules them.
Tanuki can also send you, now and then, a notification about new lessons or features, or a reminder that your reviews are waiting. To stop these, turn off Announcements in Settings.
How do I delete my account?
From the app: open Settings, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete account, then confirm. This deletes your account, guest or signed in, the backup of your progress, the record of your device and your content reports, and clears the learning data stored on your device. The action cannot be undone.
Alternatively, email support@iocodo.com with the subject "Tanuki Account Deletion" and we will process it within 30 days.
What data does Tanuki use?
Tanuki uses Firebase Analytics for usage statistics and Firebase Crashlytics for crash reports. They carry device and installation identifiers, but not your name or email address. The Privacy Policy lists every service the app talks to and what each one receives.
