Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 6 tbsp butter, divided, plus more for the pan
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Steps
- Heat the milk until it feels warm but not hot on your wrist, about 110 °F, and pour it into a large bowl. Stir in the yeast and sugar and let it stand for 5 minutes, until foamy.
- Melt the butter. Whisk 4 tbsp of it, the egg and the salt into the milk.
- Add the flour and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Knead for 8 minutes, by hand or in a stand mixer with the dough hook, until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled.
- Divide the dough into 16 pieces and roll each into a ball. Set them in a buttered 9x13-inch pan.
- Cover and let them rise for 30 to 40 minutes, until puffy. Heat the oven to 375 °F while they rise.
- Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden. Brush with the rest of the melted butter.
Make ahead: Bake them up to 1 month ahead and freeze them; warm them in a 350 °F oven for 10 minutes.
