FAA Part 107 practice test

Ten questions drawn from the same bank the app uses, at the level the knowledge test asks them. Every answer opens onto the reasoning and the section of 14 CFR it comes from, so you can check the answer instead of taking our word for it.

Ten questions

Pick an answer and the page tells you straight away whether it was right, then shows the reasoning and the rule. There is no sign-up and no score to keep, so you can start over as often as you like.

  1. 1What is the floor of Class A airspace over the contiguous United States?

    Show the answer

    A. 18,000 feet MSL

Class A airspace begins at 18,000 feet MSL and extends up to and including flight level 600, and it requires an instrument rating and clearance to enter. Small UAS operations under Part 107 stay far below this floor, so the main value of knowing it is recognizing where controlled high altitude airspace begins on a chart or in a briefing.

    FAA AIM 3-2-2

  2. 2For a small unmanned aircraft, what does weight and balance analysis primarily determine?

    Show the answer

    A. Whether the aircraft's total weight and the location of its center of gravity remain within limits that allow safe, controllable flight

Weight and balance analysis exists to confirm that total weight and center of gravity location both stay within the limits the aircraft was designed and tested for, since either one drifting out of range can compromise safe, controllable flight. Retail value, maintenance scheduling, and the Part 107 groundspeed cap are all separate considerations that have nothing to do with how the aircraft is loaded.

  3. 3What does the abbreviation CTAF stand for in the context of airport radio communications?

    Show the answer

    A. Common Traffic Advisory Frequency

CTAF stands for Common Traffic Advisory Frequency, the frequency pilots use to self-announce position and intentions at airports without an operating control tower. The other choices are invented terms that do not correspond to any recognized FAA acronym.

    AIM 4-1-9

  4. 4To be eligible for Category 1 operations over human beings under 14 CFR 107.110, a small unmanned aircraft must weigh no more than what, including everything attached to or carried by the aircraft?

    Show the answer

    A. 0.55 pounds (250 grams)

107.110 sets the Category 1 weight limit at 0.55 pounds (250 grams), measured as the total weight at takeoff including everything attached to or carried by the aircraft, not just the bare airframe. The other weight figures are far too high, and excluding attached payload from the calculation would contradict how the limit is actually measured.

    14 CFR § 107.110

  5. 5Under 14 CFR Part 107, which of the following unmanned aircraft operations is excluded from the part's requirements?

    Show the answer

    A. An operation conducted under a Part 91 airworthiness certificate issued for the small unmanned aircraft system

Section 107.1(b) excludes an operation conducted under Part 91 with an aircraft that holds its own airworthiness certificate, since that aircraft is already governed by a different regulatory framework. Compensated photography, Class G flights, and night flights are all squarely inside Part 107, they do not remove an operation from the part.

    14 CFR § 107.1(b)

  6. 6What does 14 CFR § 107.25 say about operating a small unmanned aircraft system from a moving aircraft?

    Show the answer

    D. It is prohibited, with no sparsely populated area exception of any kind

Section 107.25(a) flatly prohibits operating a small unmanned aircraft system from a moving aircraft, and the sparsely populated area exception in paragraph (b) applies only to a moving land or water borne vehicle. Neither a hovering helicopter nor an extra pilot on board changes that.

    14 CFR § 107.25(a)

  7. 7In the METAR report 'KXYZ 141953Z 18012G20KT 10SM FEW045 SCT100 24/14 A3001', what does the group 'FEW045' mean?

    Show the answer

    A. Cloud coverage of 1 to 2 oktas with bases at 4,500 feet AGL

FEW denotes 1 to 2 oktas of sky coverage, and the three digits that follow a cloud group are always height in hundreds of feet, so 045 means a base of 4,500 feet AGL. The other choices either use the wrong coverage word for the abbreviation or mistakenly treat the three digits as tens or as a raw altitude in feet rather than hundreds of feet.

  8. 8What is the defining characteristic of a prohibited area?

    Show the answer

    A. Aircraft flight is entirely prohibited within its boundaries, with no exception for transiting traffic

A prohibited area is airspace within which flight is entirely prohibited for reasons such as national security or safety, the most well known example being the small prohibited area over the White House and Capitol grounds in Washington DC. Unlike a restricted area, which can be entered with permission from the controlling agency, a prohibited area allows no such transiting exception, and it is not tied to a specific altitude band or limited to scheduled training hours.

    14 CFR Part 73

  9. 9Approximately how long does it take for the human eye to become fully adapted to darkness after exposure to bright light, which is relevant to a remote pilot conducting a night operation?

    Show the answer

    A. About 30 minutes

Full dark adaptation of the eyes takes approximately 30 minutes, which is why pilots planning night operations are advised to allow that much time before relying fully on night vision. Adaptation is not instantaneous, and neither 5 minutes nor 2 hours reflects the commonly cited adaptation period.

FAA-H-8083-25, Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 17

  10. 10A drone light show operator wants a waiver to fly dozens of small unmanned aircraft simultaneously, each controlled by automated flight paths rather than a single person manipulating each one in real time, which would otherwise conflict with the one aircraft per person limit. Which section is this waiver requesting relief from?

    Show the answer

    C. Section 107.35, operation of multiple small unmanned aircraft

The one aircraft per person limitation that a synchronized drone show needs relief from is found in section 107.35, which is on the list of waivable rules in section 107.205. Visual line of sight, the numeric operating limitations, and night operation each address different aspects of a flight and are not what is directly in conflict with controlling many aircraft from a single automated system.
